The Beginning
Trenton Lee Stewart was born on May 27, 1970, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Jerry and Sandi Stewart. With his one older sister, he grew up enjoying literature and even began writing short stories and poems in third grade! He was accepted into Hendrix College and graduated in 1992. He received a bachelor's degree in English. He married Sara Beth Estes and had two children. Stewart's first published work was a story about a man who falls overboard on a ship. The story is about his final hours. Flood Summer, Trenton's first full length novel, is a book for adults. The first agent who saw Flood Summer liked it, but not enough to sell it. Instead, Trenton sold the book to a publisher himself. Full credit for perseverance!
Mysteriousness and Motivation
Mr. Stewart (surprisingly) sent out his new novel to the same agent who rejected Flood Summer. The new series was named The Mysterious Benedict Society several publishers wanted to print his book. As soon as the book came out, Little, Brown, his publishers, had him attend book signings and meet with librarians across the country. He didn't feel like putting in as much time into Flood Summer as he was preparing to do for The Mysterious Benedict Society. He had a deadline and two young children to take care of, and he felt that his newest novel would be the one that he had to focus on if it was to gain fame and popularity.
